Chasing Perfection: Why It’s Time for a New Goal.

In a world that champions spotless, flawless standards, the pursuit of ‘perfect’ seems like the most logical ambition, doesn’t it? We’re often enticed with the idea of unblemished execution and outcomes. Fresh out of the box. Untouched. Immaculate.

But here’s an unpopular opinion: Perfect is not only overrated but also… monotonous.

Yes, I said it.

Predictable. Boring. Unoriginal.

Perfection can be a tyrant in disguise. It draws a stark line – on one side, you have absolute perfection; on the other, utter failure. But what about the vast expanse in between? Where is the recognition for progress, for evolving each day, for taking risks, for attempting something fresh and different?

This obsession with perfection is nowhere more detrimental than in the realm of leadership. Leaders are entrusted with the monumental task of guiding teams through unknown territories, spawning innovation, and invoking behaviors that resonate excellence. If your guiding star is sheer perfection, you’re inadvertently fostering a culture steeped in fear, one that shies away from the very essence of innovation and growth.

Remember those collectible toys that remain ensconced in their original boxes, never to be played with, enjoyed, or appreciated fully? It’s almost heartbreaking. They are crafted for joy, for experimentation. By keeping them untouched, aren’t we loving the idea more than its purpose?

The same goes for leadership.

If you’re tethered to the idea of perfect, there’s a good chance you’re shielding your ideas from the real world, from critique, from evolution. In essence, you’re dealing with the most fragile iteration of your idea – untouched, untested, and ultimately, unevolved.

Perfect is tedious. It lacks the zest of playfulness. It’s stringent, rigid, and inflexible, contrasting everything a leader should be – adaptable, exploratory, and open to possibilities.

If perfection is your endgame, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.

Instead, embrace the imperfect. It’s not about settling for less, but rather recognizing that true growth, innovation, and leadership lie in traversing the imperfect, undulating terrains, and not the smooth, predictable paths.
