Is Everyone an Idiot?

As a coach, there are three little words that come along every once in a while that tell me a client has to make a change.

You might’ve heard it, thought it or even said it yourself.

“Everyone’s an idiot!”

To that I say, you’ve got two options.


If – when you look around, above and below you – you truly feel like you have nothing to learn, that’s a problem. You might’ve hit a wall or realized you’re now a big fish in a small pond. You might not be aligned with where you’re at. So, make a move. Get into a room where everyone is smarter and keep finding those rooms.


If you’re unwilling or can’t make a move, you might need to check yourself. Feeling like everyone around you is an idiot could be a cop out so that you don’t have to learn, change or evolve. There’s always something to learn, so if you can’t see it, check your eyes. Are you jaded? Are you on a high horse? Are you smug with superiority? No judgment if you are, but that attitude’s gotta go.

The best leaders any of us know are humble.

They’re not doormats or pushovers, but lifelong learners whose strengths are obvious, but not obnoxious. They know where and how to grow, where they do it best and who brings it out of them.

So if you’ve gotten yourself stuck in this statement measuring everyone else, maybe you’re missing an opportunity to see yourself clearly. Nevermind if everyone is or isn’t an idiot because what that opinion might be showing you is that you aren’t aligned, and it’s your responsibility to course correct and change gears if you are.

It’s actually a gift if you can see it for what it is:

A chance to change.
