Shit is officially crazy.
Maybe that’s an understatement or something that could be said at any point in history, but there’s something about the way Twitter is lurching and jerking in Silicon Valley right now that makes this whole corporate ride more turbulent by the day.
Every morning, something is crashing and burning in the headlines, and it feels like we’re all just watching and, in my opinion, too many of us are waiting.
We’re so often spectators because it all feels so out of our control.
But it isn’t.
You are in control of you, and with that responsibility, you’re able to:
1. Stay Informed
Use your brain to pick up on trends, take notes and talk to the experts. We don’t want to see panic or apathy in a leader’s eyes, so having a concrete take on what’s happening is supportive and necessary.
2. Simulate Options
What if you suddenly got laid off? What if you got asked to work twice as hard? What if your position was wiped off the board and you had to pivot within the company? Write out all the ways this could go and, don’t just sit there, but play them out. You always have more options than you think.
3. Get a Game Plan
Buffer thyself! Look at your resume, your bank account, your goals – everything in your corner – and position yourself in the most advantageous spot so you’re not blindsided. Your job is to assess risk and impact even when shit isn’t crazy, so now would be the perfect time to batten down the hatches ahead of time.
Are there things outside of your control?
Always.
But you’re never one of them.
I’d love to hear from you! How is the current environment impacting you? What’s in YOUR control?
