We say we hate it. We wish we didn’t have to do it. We would outsource it if we could.
But we don’t because it helps us avoid the deeper shit and the bigger picture we keep talking about.
It makes us feel productive while we dance around the mountain of the dream.
It’s self-sabotage at its finest.
So many of us stay squirreling away in minutiae and dilly-dallying in drama while putting off long-term strategy and vision because what if we don’t know how to get there? What if we don’t know the answers? What if we fail?
We put it off because we’re insecure or unsure.
We also blow strategy up to be something huge that’s going to take a ton of time – “I need a whole week to map it out!” – but that’s also an element of self-sabotage. Making it bigger than it is so you never have the time to deal with it.
It’s time we realize what we’re actually avoiding – ourselves.
And address it – in small bites.
1. What are you building towards and what skills will it require to get there?
Write them out and write what’s in your way or what you’re afraid of, why you’re overwhelmed or scared it will take so long. Recognize what’s really stopping you because awareness is half the battle. Knowing what you’re really up against cuts the work in half in part because ignorance and avoidance takes so much energy.
2. How can you start to make micro-moves forward?
How can you start chipping away at the list of skills and strengths required for the next step? Is it sharpening your public speaking skills? Is it conflict meditating? Is it a wider scope of industry knowledge? Break it down into something you can do for 20 minutes a day. You’ll begin to move the needle way faster than if you avoid it and think you’ll get it all done in one big chunk of a weekend (not gonna happen).
It’s time to stop fucking around with teeny-tiny wins so we can start making some of the big strides we’re truly meant for.
