If you won’t pivot, you can’t win.

A longtime client of mine proved this recently.

Tammy took a contract role at a great company with the opportunity of it turning into a full-time position.

She was excited!

She was ready!

She was willing!

But she hated it.

  • The company didn’t follow through on the discussions and promises made in the interview process
  • There was a lot of resistance coming from the team she was supposed to help turn around
  • She was doing work she was capable of doing but didn’t want to be doing

We made our first pivot.

We got to work reframing the situation into a chance to grow, working on having a more patient mindset and laying out an influence and communication plan to get alignment from her manager and some key stakeholders.

Two months later?

She still hated it, but this time she was losing sleep, dragging with low energy and harboring a classic case of the Sunday Scaries. Her workdays were dominated by self-doubt, imposter syndrome and anxiety over getting punted back into a shaky job market if she quit or got fired.

We made our second pivot.

We got to work on a few new angles using the three pillars of my leadership system, The Powerhouse Blueprint.

1. PRESENCE

We identified and clarified her unique value proposition, strengths and skills and contrasted them with the work she really wanted to do and what was missing from this job that she really needed.

2. INFLUENCE

We sharpened her communication skills and prepared her for a few difficult conversations – both with herself and with her manager – about not liking the role, not wanting to renew the contract and not feeling like the right fit.

3. STRATEGY

We refined her career story and interview skills to target a better role for her somewhere that suited her style and strengths.

A week later?

She was beyond relieved.

With newfound belief in herself, she left the contract role and landed a full-time hard-to-beat tech firm paying $35,000 more only one month later.

If we hadn’t worked through the pivots that helped clarify what she wanted and asked for it, she might still be trying to convince herself that the contract role might work out, might get better, and might not be so bad.

She might’ve stayed miserable if not for The Powerhouse Blueprint.
